What does it mean by behaving badly in blockchains

Algorithms like proof of work/stake prevent nodes from behaving badly in blockchains. What does it mean exactly to behave badly? What result is produced by behaving badly, does it mean to add a different block?
The question seems very simple but I couldn't find an answer to it from Google.
